Roger E. Simmons, age 89, passed away Friday, August 28, 2026, at Porter Hills Village in Grand Rapids. Born December 29, 1936, in Sparta, he was the son of Warren E. and Orba A. (Empie) Simmons. Growing up as the eldest of four boys, Roger was a pillar of strength for his mother and a dedicated older brother to his siblings. His lifelong friends from kindergarten and tennis buddies stood faithfully by his side until the very end.
A man of great musical talent, energy, and community spirit, Roger was known for his love of song and dance, often playing the guitar and singing, dressing up as Santa, and organizing unforgettable fundraisers for the schools and communities. He was a member of Northlawn United Methodist Church, Ambucs, Rotary, the Schubert Male Chorus, and Hark Up, and built his career working at Sentry Insurance and Simmons & Simmons Insurance Agency.
He is survived by his first wife, Violet Simmons Williamson; his children, Connie Simmons Miller, Jim Simmons, and Andrew Simmons; his brother, Doug Simmons; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Amy, his parents, and his brothers Jim and Art.
Memorial services will be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the Sparta Civic Center, with visitation starting at 11 AM. True to the song-and-dance man he was, the memorial will be a celebration of music, featuring a performance by the Men's Schubert Choir and Hark Up’s Jump Jive Dixieland Band, with a light lunch. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to the Humane Society of West Michigan, given that he was such a dog lover. Arrangements are handled by the Marshall Funeral Home in Greenville, with complete details and condolences available at www.5691.us
