John Lawrence Reed, 71, of Stanton, passed away surrounded by family after a life filled with music, creativity, and love. Born on September 5, 1954, in Wyandotte, Michigan, to Jesse Paul Reed and Helen Francis Koche, John was truly one of a kind—an artist, a musician, a devoted family man, and a lifelong adventurer.
A gifted guitarist, he played in several rock bands, most notably Destroy All Monsters, leaving a lasting impact on Detroit’s music scene. John had a knack for turning junk into treasures, crafting guitars, and cooking up incredible meals. He found joy in floating in the pool, cheering on the Detroit Lions, visiting Esch Beach & the dunes, and spending time with those he loved.
John earned a Master’s Degree in Nursing and worked as a nurse and long-term care facility inspector, after years of running his own chimney sweep & masonry business. He never shied away from a challenge, proving time and again that reinvention was part of his fearless spirit.
He married the love of his life, Kelly Reed (Feather), on February 14, 1986, and together they built a family full of love, laughter, and adventure. John is survived by his children, Jonathan Reed, Kathleen Hansen, and Denver Chapman; and his beloved grandchildren, Walker Chapman, Jayden Reed, Aurora Reed, and Naomi Cerda. He also leaves behind his best friend, Dean Scrimger (Canton, MI), and a large extended family, including sisters-in-law Toni Biden (East Lansing), Sherry (Greg) Jeffreys (Crystal, MI), Sue (Chris) Weiers (Arkansas), and Louise Reed (West Palm Beach, FL); brothers-in-law Terry Parkhurst and Mark Feather (Byron Center); and nieces Kim Reed (FL) and Heather Reed-Lee (NC).
John was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Jim and Phil Reed; and his sisters Patricia and Karen Reed.
John lived boldly, worked hard, and always put family first. His kindness, humor, and unwavering love will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the lives he touched.
As per his wishes, John will be cremated, and a service and memorial will be held at 1 pm on May 03, at Marshall Funeral Home in Greenville, Michigan.
