David N. Smith, age 78, of Greenville passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at home under the care of Corewell Hospice and family. He was born October 14, 1947, in Grand Rapids, the son of Alton & Thelma (Kauffman) Smith.
David joined the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. Upon returning home, he worked at Electrolux Home Products and then retired from Illinois Tool Works (ITW). Most notably, he met the love of his life, and they enjoyed a life together for 54 years. In the early years, he loved to fish, bowl, play golf, and play cribbage. In later years, he loved to walk on the nature trails and always enjoyed seeing wildlife. Above all, family was the most important thing in his life. He was always there if you needed anything. He looked forward to hosting cookouts for family and friends on holiday weekends.
David is survived by his wife Cherie; daughter Melinda (Patrick) Zoerman of Gowen; grandchildren Zachary Zoerman, Trey (Paige) Zoerman, and Ian Zoerman; great-granddaughter Abby Zoerman; sister Linda Rawley of Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Robert Smith of Holly and Harry Smith; and his sisters Lorraine Youngren of Mississippi and Rose Cogswell of Greenville; and his brothers-in-law Marvin Cogswell, Dave Rawley, and Jim Youngren.
No services are planned at this time. Burial will be in Cato Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Marshall Funeral Home, Greenville, www.5691.us for complete obituary and to leave a message of condolence for the family.
